Ted Brunning (Sound Artist)

Ted Brunning’s Sound Art sits mainly within Sound Sculpture. He became interested in Sound Art at the age of nineteen, and has an undergraduate degree in Sound Arts and Design from UAL and a masters in Sonic Arts from Goldsmiths.

The premise at the centre of Ted’s Sound Art works is that loudspeakers have equal rights with all materials. This is a play on something that Kurt Schwitters, a central figure in the Dada art movement said, whose works were based around ‘the combination, for artistic purposes of all conceivable materials'. Ted likes to make sculptures and install speakers in them, and then play sound pieces through the resulting objects. This act is not limited to sculpture, and can be carried out within more or less any form of art imaginable, the idea is that if it is a physical thing, it is possible to put a speaker in it, or in some way incorporate a speaker into it, and play sound through it.
